Nice that its being done up but I'm not sure about fibre optics - natural surroundings like parks shouldn't need sparkles to make them look nice, it's like gilding the lilly. (fibre optics are just for Christmas not for life).

Very good point Accura. The place needs people employed to look after it, which would be much cheaper than spending £3m on gimmicks.

Preston's leaders are continuing to act like the African and American Natives, who would sell their land to the first colonialists in return for anything that glittered and sparkled.

Also, the rubbish problem is obviously in need of a solution, but it will take far more than just cleaners and gardeners (which the square already has) to solve the overall problem.

They've not sold any land this time - but they seem all too willing to sell our town's heritage and soul.

There are far fewer cleaners and parkies than there were 30 years ago, though we generate far more rubbish than we did then. Whatever solution we do come up with for litter, employing human beings to pick it up will be right at the heart of it.

Last time I was in Winckley Square, it was swarming with Traffic Wardens, (one of whom was actually hiding in the bushes!) - perhaps we could get some of these Traffic Wardens to pick up litter in between issuing their tickets...

Good stuff. Get on to Lancashire County Council. I'm sure they will jump at the chance to give up their precious parking wardens!

There are three gardeners/cleaners who are responsible for Avenham Park, Miller Park and Winckley enclosure....... rather a lot of work for three people I would say!

It is (but don't forget that other street cleaners sweep the paths and empty the bins of those places), but considering that they work there every day its probably not much more work than any other job!

The money available for maintenance, and even lighting, is drying up rapidly - so while the council pumps money into Winckley Square they are abandoning the rest of Preston's open spaces to vandals and litter.

Seems likely to me that unless the Council change their policies on maintenance, we will find that not long after pumping all this capital into Winckley Square, it turns back into the neglected space it is now, just like the other parks and play areas in Preston.

Over the past few years, the council (and other organisations, not to give the council full credit) has done a fantastic job of keeping Preston's parks upkeep. I can safely say that our parks are something to be proud of, and I certainly don't blame the council if mindless vandals continue to trash the place. I blame the vandals.

As a very regular user of parks in preston I don't have too many complaints. Most of the people I walk/talk with are quite satisfied with them.
Floodlighting would be good at night though, since they are no go areas after dark for a whole variety of reasons.
I have often thought it's a shame that the PNE flood lights can't be swivelled around to light up Moor park at night (on none match nights onviously) - then I might not mind so much when PNE take over the car park when they play at home

And how come it cost so much to decide on the state of the parks - I don't understand why they didn't just go and have a look and chat to the park users.

You are so lucky to have parks in Preston - over here in OZ we dont have such things well not where i live anyway.when I was back home last year I spent time on Avenham Park/Miller Parks which have many happy memories for me,ofcourse that was many years ago.While back home in Preston we had dinner at what used to be Winkley Square convent (cant remember name ) it was opposite Winkley Sq Park,unfortunatley there was a bunch of loud mouth yobbos standing blocking the way to get onto the Park and my sister said it wasnt worth the agro of trying to get past them (fortunatley you cant class everyone the same) IF we did have parks I dare say the way the world is these days our Parks also wouldnt be safe to walk in night or day.

PS When I say we dont have parks over here that isnt quite true,but our parks arnt like the ones back home,we have plenty of playground areas with swings/See-saws/SlipperyDips (ossie for slides ) Sand pits etc etc and YES unfortunatley we do have the idiots who try to spoil things for the kids by damaging the equipment but at least it keeps the council workmen in work.And Yes you wouldnt want to walk through a play area in the dark or even in daylight by yourself.yobbos/druggies and some quite respectable looking folk wouldnt think twice about grabbing your handbag or belting you to get your watch or jewlery just to get a few cans,or a smoke of happy wacky tobbaco.Thank goodness the world of ours isnt all bad.

yes tess, they are beautifull parks, unfortunately, we dont use them enough, i go on at least once a year, "easter monday" and then maybe have a cycle through at least a couple of time throughtout summer, they are underused, and maybe something should be put on to attract people to them.A few years ago they had some sort of musical festival on, i went with my daughter and her friend, although i could not tell you who was playing, it was a good day, it attracted us, otherwise we may not have bothered.!!!!!
